Causes and Prevention
Known Causes of Childhood Cancers

      “My people perish for lack of knowledge.”
                                                 ~ Hosea 4:6

Worldwide Cancer Epidemic

Every nation reports that childhood cancer is a major health crisis. Cancer causes more pain, suffering, and death for infants, children and teenagers than AIDS, Asthma, Cystic Fibrosis, Diabetes, and Muscular Dystrophy combined!

Every day across America, more than 55 children will be diagnosed with cancer, and one child in nearly 250 is diagnosed with cancer that is more aggressive than adult forms of the disease, yet childhood cancer research for causes, prevention, and the cure is minimal.

“Childhood cancer has reached epidemic proportions in recent years”, reports Samuel Epstein, M.D., internationally respected cancer expert.

In the past three decades, childhood acute lymphocytic leukemia has increased by 68.7%, testicular cancer has risen in boys by 66%, and cancers of the brain and nervous system in children increased by 56.5%.  These are alarming statistics for every parent to ponder.

You Deserve the Truth

The Cancer Establishment in North America claims that “No one knows what causes cancer in children, and there is nothing parents can do to help prevent the disease.”  There is a tendency for childhood cancer websites around the world to make the same blanket statement without questioning its accuracy.  It is common to blame genetics even though children rarely inherit a cancer-causing gene.

Our Promise to You

Children Against Cancer promises to provide you with fully documented science and numerous published research studies that reveal how toxic chemicals that kids are exposed to every day play a “significant role” in the epidemic of childhood cancers and other health problems.

The Dangers of Chemicals

There are five million man-made chemicals worldwide and approximately 110,000 are in common use today.  The United States manufactures and imports an average of 80,000 chemicals per year.  Since World War II, industry has saturated our families, and our indoor and outdoor environments, with a vast number of chemicals marketed and used in our everyday lives.

Pitiful “Regulations”

In 1976 the United States Congress passed the Toxic Substance Control Act (TSCA) with the intention of protecting men, women, and children and our fragile environment from the dangers of toxic chemicals.  Incredibly, the vast majority of the 110,000 chemicals have never been tested for human safety!  The law does not require manufacturers to prove safety studies of their products before marketing them to unsuspecting consumers.

When you purchase products, you assume that they have been tested for safety, or else they would not be for sale.  Yet, when manufacturers voluntarily submit the results of their own testing to government regulatory agencies, some of them edit out “huge portions of key health and safety” data, claiming that it is their confidential trade and business information. The regulatory agencies cannot review them.   State regulations are, therefore, pitiful and inadequate.  All the ingredients do not have to be listed on labels, so you won’t know if they are safe or not.

Kids Exposed Every Day

Many parents, without meaning to, expose their innocent babies, children and teenagers to countless combinations of toxic, dangerous chemicals and carcinogens (cancer-causing agents) hidden in a wide range of products:

  • Pet products for fleas and ticks: pesticides, insecticides
  • Cell and mobile telephones: toxins, electromagnetic radiation (EMR)
  • Toys: lead, BPAs, phthalates
  • Clothes, bedding: flame retardants, phthalates, formaldehyde
  • GMOs in conventional food, medicines, vaccines: toxins, viruses
  • High-tension power lines, microwave ovens: electro. radiation (EMR)
  • Dental amalgam (silver) fillings: 50% mercury
  • Water: chlorine, fluoride, arsenic, rocket fuel, aluminum, cadmium, strong prescription drugs including synthetic hormones, anti-depressants, etc.
  • Gasoline emissions: carcinogens

  • Household cleaners: toxic chemicals
  • Personal care products: aluminum, dioxins, toxins,
  • Pesticides, insecticides, herbicides, fungicides: carcinogens, toxins
  • Tobacco second-hand smoke: carcinogens
  • Plastic baby bottles, pacifiers, water bottles, food packaging: BPAs
  • Nonstick cookware: PFOA, a suspected carcinogen
  • Disposable diapers, baby wipes: chlorine, dioxin (carcinogens)
  • Food and beverages: pesticides, additives, coal tar dyes, chemicals
  • Pharmaceutical and over-the-counter drugs: aluminum, toxins
  • Vaccines: carcinogens, aluminum, mercury, MSG, viruses, blood

Toxic Chemicals in the Womb!

Recent lab studies performed by the U.S. Environmental Working Group (EWG) made the astonishing discovery that 287 industrial chemicals, pollutants and pesticides were present in the umbilical cord blood of babies born in United States hospitals in 2004.  The lab tests found:

  • 180 chemicals known to cause cancer in humans
  • 217 are toxic to a baby’s brain and nervous system
  • 208 chemicals that cause birth defects or abnormal development

Prevention Begins Early

“Health is the ideal state of childhood, yet various diseases lie in wait to interrupt it….the mother is wise…knowing what to do…and guarding against perilous maladies.”
- The Mother’s Manual (1904) by Emelyn Lincoln Coolidge, M.D., Babies Hospital, New York USA

A century ago, cancer was unknown in children and rarely diagnosed in adults.  The ravaging disease was not mentioned at all in The Mother’s Manual, a trusted childhood guide for new mothers written in 1904 by a prominent American pediatrician.

Raising a health family today in our chemically-saturated 21st century environment is challenging in ways that Victorian-age parents never had to consider.  Babies and children now suffer from an alarming increase of complex modern diseases and adverse health conditions, including:

*  Cancer
*  Diabetes
*  Autism
*  Birth defects
*  HIV/AIDS
*  Obesity
*  Learning disabilities
*  Downs syndrome

“Young children do not smoke, drink alcohol, or hold stressful jobs.  Children do, however, receive a greater dose of whatever chemicals are in air, food, and water because, pound for pound, they breathe, eat, and drink more than adults do….they are also affected by parental exposures before conception, as well as exposures in the womb.” ~ Sarah Steingraber, Ph.D.

Womb Not Safe

Scientists and doctors used to believe that a developing fetus was safe inside your womb with the placenta and blood-brain barrier shielding baby from most chemicals and toxins that parents were exposed to.

Research data indicates that even low levels of toxins prove to be harmful, especially to your vulnerable unborn baby, and contribute to the alarming increase of childhood cancers, brain damage, birth defects, and other serious health conditions.

DNA Damage and Chemicals

According to internationally respected Dr. Joseph Mercola:
“Research studies estimate that most North American adults have somewhere between 400 and 800 chemicals in their bodies.”

Many chemicals may be passed on to your baby in the male sperm or female egg at the time of conception, causing damage to the child’s DNA, allowing cancer cells to develop in the womb or later during the childhood years.

Giving children the potential for excellent health and happiness in a toxin-free environment is the greatest gift of all.

Following are a few important tips from our eBook (coming soon!) titled:

Healthy Pregnancy & Baby

Both parents-to-be need to assume responsibility for planning a healthy baby in our toxic environment, where a wide range of synthetic chemicals, including carcinogens, are hidden in foods, beverages, personal care and household cleaning products, toxins used also against weeds, pest control, and in medicines, vaccines and pet products.  Toxic chemicals in your home and workplace can linger for years in our fragile environment and may affect the health of your unborn baby and child during the growing years and in future generations.

Doris Rapp, M.D., says that a man’s sperm may be contaminated with pollutants that cause serious damage to the baby’s DNA at conception.  She suggests that you have your semen and blood tested for toxins six months before you plan to conceive a child.

The mother-to-be should have a pre-pregnancy exam and take daily prenatal vitamins.  A new research study published in the Clinical Pharmacology & Therapies journal reports that a mother taking prenatal vitamins with folic acid before and during the entire pregnancy reduces risks of childhood cancers, including leukemia, brain tumours, and neuroblastoma, the deadliest form of cancer in babies and children.  Folic acid also helps to prevent birth defects including heart problems, cleft palate, limb defects, and brain damage.

Eat organic food.  Joel Fuhrman, M.D., family physician and author of Disease-Proof Your Child, encourages both parents to eat only organic foods months before conception and all during pregnancy.  Organic fruits, vegetables, nuts, juices, grains, breads, eggs, dairy, and meats (although a vegetarian diet is healthier) provide superior nutrition compared to conventional or processed foods that contain pesticides, synthetic hormones, antibiotics, and other worrisome chemicals that can harm you and your baby.

Although some people find organic foods “too expensive”, consider the wisdom of a pediatric nurse:  “You can justify the higher cost of organic nutrition as a form of health insurance.  Cut back on unnecessary expenses elsewhere and make organic nutrition a top priority.”

Avoid Genetically Corrupted Foods.  The safety of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) is one of the most controversial and frightening issues of our age.  Also described as Genetically Engineered, Biotechnology, Genetically Altered, Transgenic, (even as “Frankenfoods” by critics), multinational corporations have manipulated the DNA found in plants by infusing them with genes from different species in bizarre ways never found in nature.  For a thorough evaluation exposing GMO foods as unfit for human or animal consumption, please see our new eBook titled:
The Truth About GMOs.

Go Green for a clean, healthy lifestyle.  There is a growing interest about “going green”--a return to living in harmony with Nature, and to reduce exposure to chemicals and toxins that impact your family’s health as well as damage our water, air, soil, and the amazing creatures that share the planet with us.

Cleanse to eliminate toxins.  You cannot entirely avoid pollutants in your daily life, but you may reduce the body burden of chemicals, heavy metals, and toxins through dietary changes and gentle herbal cleansing procedures.

Contact a licensed Naturopath or holistic doctor trained to help you and your spouse to gently detoxify and eliminate contaminants in preparation for a healthy pregnancy.  The cleansing is NOT recommended for a woman already pregnant or breastfeeding an infant, as toxins released could harm the child.

Do not use pesticides, herbicides, insecticides or pet pest control products in your home, yard, or at the work place.  Pesticides are poisons!  Although they kill bugs and weeds, human and pet exposure to the chemicals used in these products are linked to cancers and other health problems.  See our Special Report titled: Nontoxic Pest Control for safer alternatives to eliminating and controlling pests without toxic chemicals.
